Home-based: Understand Contour lines in Circles

Contour lines are found on maps as well as in art. Contour lines can be used to create an optical illusion.

In this week's project, I used contour lines to suggest a different planet in the solar system.
They are drawn in different colours. If you find drawing a circle difficult, look around the house for objects with a round base in different sizes.

Contour lines are drawn in to make circles appeared 3-Dimensional. It changes a circle into a sphere.

My little one wanted to help me draw it out on paper. So we did a wax-resist technique with oil pastel and diluted paint that has been simplified for a pre-schooler.

Step 1: With oil pastel, draw different sizes of circles on the paper.
We pasted three sheets of paper together to get a long composition.

Step 2: Fill in each circle with contour lines and add in the rings on some planets.

Step 3: Add dots to the entire piece of paper. These represent stars. Q did random dots, if you are a solar system expert, it would be interesting to use this step to dot out an alignment of stars.

Step 4: Time to paint
