Home-based: Understand Principle of Design - Variety

Variety can be understood as A Small Change in a composition of repeated or similar subjects. It can be used to spice up a simple image or subject.

In the example below, Colour is the change.

In the example below, the Size/Scale is the change.

In this example below, two species of cup-shaped flower is the change.

How to draw different cup-shaped flowers. In the following step-by-step, there are six cup-shaped flowers:

Home-based: Understand Contour lines in Circles

Contour lines are found on maps as well as in art. Contour lines can be used to create an optical illusion.

In this week's project, I used contour lines to suggest a different planet in the solar system.
They are drawn in different colours. If you find drawing a circle difficult, look around the house for objects with a round base in different sizes.

Contour lines are drawn in to make circles appeared 3-Dimensional. It changes a circle into a sphere.

My little one wanted to help me draw it out on paper. So we did a wax-resist technique with oil pastel and diluted paint that has been simplified for a pre-schooler.

Step 1: With oil pastel, draw different sizes of circles on the paper.
We pasted three sheets of paper together to get a long composition.

Step 2: Fill in each circle with contour lines and add in the rings on some planets.

Step 3: Add dots to the entire piece of paper. These represent stars. Q did random dots, if you are a solar system expert, it would be interesting to use this step to dot out an alignment of stars.

Step 4: Time to paint

Home-based: Understand the near and the far

Near and Far is part of the Element of Art (Space) because it denotes the concept of distance between subjects within a composition.

In the Art language, we can describe space as Foreground, middle ground and background.

For this project, I will use the Saguaro cactus to help me explain.
To draw Saguaro cactus,
- you can draw longish ovals in a green colour crayon or colour pencil.
- And to fill it with a different green.
- For the thorns, try white instead of black

To understand Near and Far, repeat the same cactus in different sizes.

This can be done as one composition (as above) or multiple compositions.

When the cactus is done, the background can be coloured in.

Home-based: Understand the radial burst of a Dandelion

I borrowed the image done by another artist as I felt that the way it was drawn, easily explained the concept of a Radial Burst .

It can be done in a single colour or in a range of 2 - 3 tones.

Choose a colour

At this step, ensure that the lines are of similar height.

Once again, ensure that the lines are of similar height.

For more petals, you can repeat Step 4 and Step 5 with different heights.
